Protecting yourself from Uninsured Drivers Author:    Posted under: Auto InsuranceAuto Insurance questions answered

In every state, law concerning car insurance varies. One thing that is common though, is the need for every motorist to have one. Unfortunately, there are still those who go without any or not enough liability coverage. In these present, hard times, insurance is always the first one to suffer.

Let’s face it, no matter how careful you are on the road, accidents sometimes happen. So, how do you protect or what can you do to protect yourself from uninsured or underinsured motorists?

First, check your policy and see if your coverage includes protection against uninsured or underinsured drivers. The Uninsured Motorist (UM) part of your policy covers you when the at-fault driver has no insurance coverage at all. This will assure you that you will recover the money for your injuries, suffering, unpaid medical bills, wage loss or any other expenses that you may incur after the accident.

The Underinsured Motorist (UIM), on the other hand, covers you when the at-fault driver’s insurance is not enough to pay for the damages incurred.

The key here is the other driver should be at fault in order for your UM or UIM coverage to take effect.

Although the UM or UIM part of your policy covers your bodily harm and injuries and lost compensation, it does not, however, protect your car. To avoid such a thing from happening, make sure that you also carry collision coverage on your vehicle. This will ensure that you get coverage for any damaged done on your vehicle. This coverage specifically pays for car repairs or replacement.

Generally, the state requires that insurance companies pay the minimum amount stated on your liability insurance. However, you can always get higher limits for additional premium.

In this time of economic struggle, it is best to protect ourselves the best way we can. Paying additional premium for added coverage such as UM or UIM will certainly give you peace of mind.  It is better to be safe than sorry in the end.
