Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Program Author:    Posted under: Health InsuranceHealth Insurance questions answeredHealth Insurance Types

In a country, it is viewed that the people are its best assets.  It should not, therefore, come as a surprise that those people who work for the federal government and postal services, are entitled to health services that could help enrich their lives and take care of their well-being.

One benefit that the government provides its employees is the Federal Employees Health Benefits (FEHB).  Covered under this policy are the employees themselves, their families, and retirees.  FEHB is a plan that is as flexible as it can get, where you can opt to choose a plan that best fits your financial needs, while offering the best coverage.  Aside from the FEHB, federal employees are also entitled to the Dental and Vision Insurance Program (FEDVIP).  This is a supplemental dental and vision insurance coverage.  Dental coverage provides a comprehensive list of services, while vision plans provide coverage for eye examinations, refraction of lenses, frames, and contact lenses.  Even Lasik surgery may also be covered under this policy.

For dental and vision coverage, it is available to the employee and their eligible dependents on an “enrollee-pay-all” basis.  This means that insurance coverage is on a group basis, thereby eliminating any conditions under the clause of pre-existing illnesses, and offering competitive cost premiums.  This is withheld from the salary of the employee on a pre-tax basis.  Among the rules for eligibility are the following: the employee’s spouse, and unmarried and dependent children under 22; if under 22, must be incapable of self-support.  You have to be eligible for the said FEHB program before you can be deemed eligible for the FEDVIP.  Premiums are also likewise not based on where you live, or the rates of existing insurance plans in your locale.

More information can be viewed on the government’s official website: http://www.opm.gov/insure/.  This site allows for you to check your eligibility, view plan options, and other frequently asked questions as well.
